With summer officially here, it’s time to light up the grill, enjoy longer days and if you’re like me, bathe in sun block so that you do not go up in flames from the warmer temps.
If you live in or plan to visit New York City this summer you may want to check out some of the many fireworks shows available to the public. There are plenty of chances to “ooh” and “aah” with a few hundred strangers on a warm summer evening over the new few months. Here are just a few of the shows taking place:
Of course no list of firework shows is complete without mentioning the big one – Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show on the Hudson River. In its 35th year, this show is the mother f all firework shows. Hosted by Nick Lachey and with performances by Beyonce and Brad Paisley, this star studded show kicks off at 9pm. If you’re not up to viewing it in person, just flip over to NBC for live coverage. Something this New Yorkers seems to do every year. Nothing like fireworks in HD!
If you find yourself in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn on a Friday night this summer look up. That’s because the Brooklyn Alliance and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce light up some big sparklers between 10th and 11th street at around 9:30pm. The Friday night fireworks run through September 2.
Other nights to catch fireworks in Coney Island, courtesy of the Brooklyn Cyclones softball team include: Saturday June 25; Wednesday June 29; Sunday July 3; Saturday July 16; Saturday August 6; and Saturday August 20.
Speaking of softball teams and fireworks, the Staten Island Yankees will have post-game firework displays on July 4th and after every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night game.
Back in Brooklyn, Grucci will host a firework show for the Fort Hamilton Independence Day Celebration on July 2 with a performance by Ne-Yo.
Another Grucci firework display will take place on June 30 in Queens in Astoria Park at the Central Astoria Independence Celebration. Enjoy the sky being lit up as the Astoria Symphony Orchestra performs live.
Also on June 30, the Bronx Salutes America will feature live music by Alive N Kickin’ and 9pm fireworks at Orchard Beach.
Finally, in my old stomping grounds, Rockaway Beach will host a July 3rd firework show at Jamaica Bay courtesy of the Breezy Point Cooperative.
There are plenty of places to gawk at the firework shows mentioned above. From hotels to vacation home rentals to rooftops and designated viewing areas, chances are you’ll get a great view easily.
Or you can be like me and turn on the air conditioner, lower the lights and watch it on TV.
