Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is going after Upper Deck for at least $1 million. The lawsuit was filed by Martin Singer with Lavely & Singer today in LA. According to the lawsuit “Abdul-Jabbar never authorized the production of the cards. In fact, at all times, Upper Deck was fully aware that Abdul-Jabbar had never authorized Upper Deck to use his photograph, name and signature for college-themed cards, and Abdul-Jabbar had previous rejected Upper Deck’s request for such authorization.
Kareem says UD used the photos of himself, while he was a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, on its “Greats of the Game” card series. Some of the cards also feature Abdul-Jabbar’s name and signature.
Upper Deck is being accused of unjust enrichment and violating unfair competition laws, among other things.
